Today, more than 117 million people worldwide have been forcibly
displaced, including 44.6 million refugees and asylum-seekers, with
children accounting for 38% of those affected. In Trinidad and
Tobago alone, over 26,500 registered asylum-seekers and refugees
from more than 40 nationalities continue to seek safety and
protection. Unlike migrants who move voluntarily for work or
education, refugees flee conflict, persecution, violence, and serious
human rights violations. Their journeys are often dangerous, driven
by the fundamental need for safety and dignity.
