The Caribbean Centre for Human Rights (CCHR) proudly announces the launch of its in-house Strategic Litigation Services, marking a major advancement in its mission to protect and promote human rights throughout the Caribbean region. This initiative is generously supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Open Society Foundation (OSF), both of which continue to champion justice and human rights globally.
Empowering Communities through Legal Action
This bold new initiative is designed to empower vulnerable individuals and communities by providing direct legal representation in cases that expose systemic human rights violations. With its own in-house legal team, CCHR will now be able to directly challenge injustices in the courts, promote accountability, and drive legal reform through impactful litigation.
“This initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring access to justice,” said Mary Jo Marsden, Executive Director of CCHR.
“Strategic litigation has the power to bring about transformative change in society, and we are now better equipped to take on impactful cases that can set legal precedents and uphold the fundamental rights of individuals across the Caribbean.”
Focus Areas of Strategic Litigation
CCHR’s Strategic Litigation Services will prioritize the following key areas:
- Discrimination and Inequality: Addressing injustices based on race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and other marginalized identities.
- Access to Justice: Challenging systemic barriers that hinder vulnerable populations from accessing fair legal processes.
- Freedom of Expression and Assembly: Defending the rights of individuals and civil society groups to speak freely and assemble without fear.
- Migrant and Refugee Rights: Advocating for non-nationals and displaced persons facing legal and human rights challenges in the region.
Collaborative Human Rights Advocacy
With this new capability, CCHR aims to collaborate with community organizations, international partners, and legal professionals to achieve high-impact outcomes and lasting human rights reforms
