Brief info

Sheldon Sookram is a Legal Officer at the Caribbean Centre for Human Rights (CCHR), where he leads strategic litigation efforts aimed at addressing systemic human rights violations across the Caribbean. In this capacity, he handles complex matters including false imprisonment, assault and battery, immigration rights, and constitutional law, while advocating for justice before the High Court, Magistrates’ Court, and Immigration Hearings. His role also includes close collaboration with the United Nations Refugee Agency to advance refugee and asylum protections

Sheldon brings extensive experience in public law, constitutional law, judicial review, and civil litigation. His career includes roles at prominent legal firms such as Vivek Lakhan-Joseph and Associates, Alexander Jeremie and Company, and Freedom Law Chambers. Throughout his practice, he has successfully represented clients in negligence, industrial relations, contract, and judicial review matters, drafting a wide range of pleadings, submissions, and legal opinions. He has appeared in trials as both an instructing and advocate attorney
An academic achiever, Sheldon earned his LL.B. with Upper Second Class Honours from the University of the West Indies, securing a place on the Dean’s Honour List. He went on to complete his Legal Education Certificate (LEC) at Hugh Wooding Law School with four As and six Bs, and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Corporate and Commercial Law, set for completion in December 2025

Beyond the courtroom, Sheldon has demonstrated leadership and advocacy on the global stage. He represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. and New York, and has been recognized for his contributions to writing and thought leadership, including awards from the Integrity Commission and published work in The Gavel, Hugh Wooding Law School’s magazine
